AFL Football at TIO Stadium, Marrara

Darwin accommodation

A lot of talented footballers have joined the AFL from the Northern Territory and now some of them return to play in front of their home fans when a regular season game is played in Darwin each season.

Fans can expect to see the Port Adelaide Power, Richmond Tigers, Melbourne Demons and Western Bulldogs in games at Marrara. These games can be at any time of the season but will probably be played between May and July.

One aspect of the games in Darwin that is different to the other AFL games played around Australia is how the teams are affected by the heat and humidity. Special cool rooms have been introduced for players to escape the conditions and it is common practice for a player to put on an ice vest after being interchanged off the ground.

In 2010, Melbourne and Port Adelaide played a one point thriller at Marrara. It was Melbourne 111 and Port Adleiade 110. Four goals to Jamie Bennell and three goals to Brad Green won the game for Melbourne. Travis Boak and Cameron Hitchcock each kicked three goals for the Power while Kane Cornes had 28 possessions.

Later in 2010 the Western Bulldogs had an easy victory over the Power. Scores were close at half time before the Bulldogs pulled away for the 83 to 47 win as Port Adelaide could only manage one goal in the second half. Several Bulldogs starred with over 30 possessions including Matthew Boyd, Daniel Cross, Jarrod Harbrow and Ryan Hargrave. Jay Schulz kicked two goals while Kane Cornes also added two goals as well as 36 possessions.

Another game to attend is the AFL Indigenous All Stars versus a visiting AFL club during the AFL preseason. It is a practice match but the speed and skill are of a high quality.

Cricket is also played at Marrara. International Test Matches and One Day games have been held there, involving Australia playing against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
