Darwin Smith Street Mall – CBD

Darwin accommodation

The Darwin Mall is centred on Smith Street and is the second largest shopping area in the city after Casuarina Square. The major part of the Darwin Smith Street Mall is the Knuckey Street and Bennett Street portion, which is a car-free area devoted purely to the pursuit of retail therapy. Along the Smith Street Mall you will find major supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths as well as more than 200 specialty shops. There are a number of shops that focus on tourist souvenirs and items for travellers and there are a number of art galleries and other interesting cultural sites to explore. The Smith Street Malls extends 4.5 kilometres down to The Esplanade on Darwin Harbour and is a pleasant place to stroll whether you are on a shopping mission for specific items or whiling away some time.

While shopping and roaming through art galleries, you are sure to work up a thirst and an appetite and there is plenty of thirst quenching and hunger satiating options along the mall. Darwin’s iconic pub, the Victoria Hotel is located on Smith Street and is a great place to stop off for a drink. The pub, which was built in 1884, received extensive damage as a result of Cyclone Tracy, but has never stopped serving thirsty patrons for more than a century. Since the mall is open air, the shop opening times vary quite significantly, but in general shops open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and on the weekends between 9am and 12pm.
