Darwin Car Rental

Darwin car hire search:

Darwin is a great holiday destination and a car - or a campervan is a must to see all the great sights of the Territory.

Hiring a car in Darwin is pretty easy - and there are plenty of options. Darwin airport offers all the major operators: Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar and Thrifty and it’s a good place to start your Top End driving holiday.

All the above companies also have offices in Darwin CBD for both pick-ups and drop-offs with vehicles ranging from small hatchbacks to large 4WDs - a must for offroad travel.
Airport Rent A Car also operate adjacent to the airport - just outside the airport grounds and if you pre-book, they’ll pick you up at the terminal.

For those on a budget, car hire in Darwin offers a number of options with smaller, independent companies like Cheapa Rentacar, Peter’s Private Hire Car and Bargain Wheels. Make sure your insurance is comprehensive in the NT.

Campervan hire is a great way to see the Northern Territory and there are plenty of campervan hire options in Darwin.

Wicked Campers with those tongue in cheek comments painted on their vans, are one such company. Others include Britz, Apollo, Backpacker, Cheapa Campa, Maui and Hippie Camper.

Rates vary from lower wet season to high dry and there is a huge variety of vehicles on offer, from 2-berth campers to magnificent ensuite 5 and 6-berth vans.
A valid licence for hirers over 21 is a must and all companies take credit cards and eftpos. But check when booking if it includes breakdown assistance.

The Territory is vast and drivers are advised not to try and drive, drive, drive.
Beware of road trains - huge trucks as long as 50 metres and understand the distances between fuel stops are also vast, so plan your trip carefully.

And the maximum speed limit on highways has recently been reduced to 130kph.
If driving in remote areas, try to avoid driving at night as cattle - and sometimes camels - congregate on roadsides.
