Aboriginal Lands
Most Aboriginal lands can be entered but permission is needed. Permits for the Kakadu National Park are easy to obtain where your permit is included in your National Park fee. Details available from Northern Land Council, PO Box 42921, Casuarina, NT 0811.

 

Clothing
Casual clothing in this tropical climate is the norm. However some establishments will not accept T shirts and thongs. Smarter casual clothing is worn in the evenings.

 

Crocodiles
Both estuarine (saltwater) and Johnson River (freshwater) crocodiles inhabit the rivers and billabongs. Do NOT swim unless you have very accurate local knowledge about the crocodiles in the area.

Dehydration
Dehydration is a serious problem in the Northern Territories. You should carry at least two litres of water for every hour of activity that you might undertake.

Power is 240 volt AC as in the rest of Australia.

Police can be called on the emergency number 000 or for less urgent and routine matters on 08 8922 3344. Darwin police station is at the Mitchell Centre on the corner of Mitchell and Knuckey Street.

 

Darwin Tourism Information
The main tourist information office is at Beagle House, located on the corner of Knuckey and Mitchell Streets (08 8936 2499). The Parks and Wildlife office is in Palmerston (08 8999 4555) but most of what you need is available at Darwin tourism office.

Jelly Fish
At certain times of the year Box jelly fish are found in the ocean and are dangerous and in some cases can kill. Heed local notices and advice when entering the ocean.
