Darwin Theatres

Darwin accommodation

Even though Darwin is a laid back city that does not mean that it is devoid of cultural pursuits and performances. There is a range of Darwin theatres and events that are held all throughout the year in the city. During the dry season many events are held in charming out doors surroundings. The largest performance space in the city is the Darwin Entertainment Centre, which regularly plays host to visiting Australian and international music artists and groups, dance companies and musicals. There is also a booking office at the centre, which acts as an agent for events all throughout the Northern Territory. The Darwin Theatre Company regularly stages performances ranging from original works to Shakespearean plays throughout the city and even in some of the city’s gardens. Brown’s Mart Theatre is a great place to catch a performance with its rich ambience evoked from the 19th century building that houses the theatre. The building was built in 1885 and became a theatre in 1972 after eclectic previous incarnations as a market, torpedo workshop and Crown Law office. Today you can see performances and take part in theatre workshops all throughout the year.

For theatre of the cinematic kind, the best way to see a movie in Darwin is at the Deckchair Cinema. Throughout the dry season the Deckchair Cinema operates from its location in the Wharf Precinct showing a range of movies including a strong contingent of Aussie films. Out in the warm night air, you can pull up a patch of grass or unfold a deck chair to lie back and enjoy a movie while sipping on a glass of wine and supping on a picnic dinner.
